What is a URL Cleaner Extension?

A URL cleaner extension (also called a link expander or tracking stripper) is a browser tool that:

  • Reveals hidden destinations โ€” Shows where shortened links (bit.ly, t.co, tinyurl) actually lead before you click
  • Removes tracking parameters โ€” Strips marketing tags like utm_source, fbclid, gclid from URLs
  • Protects your privacy โ€” Prevents advertisers from tracking which links you clicked and shared

LinkTransparency is a free URL cleaner extension for Chrome and Firefox that does all three โ€” with an inline preview that works on any webpage.

vs. ClearURLs

ClearURLs strips trackers automatically but cannot expand shortened links or show you where they go. LinkTransparency does both โ€” you see the destination AND the trackers being removed.

vs. Unshorten.it / CheckShortURL

These websites require copy-paste and tab switching. LinkTransparency works inline on any page โ€” hover, click, see the destination without leaving.

vs. Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger blocks third-party trackers but doesn't reveal link destinations. LinkTransparency focuses on transparency: showing you where links lead before you click.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Link Transparency? +

Link Transparency is a browser extension that reveals where shortened links actually go before you click them. Hover over any bit.ly, t.co, or tinyurl link, click the magnifying glass icon, and see the full destination instantly. It also strips tracking parameters so you can share cleaner links.

How is it different from Unshorten.it or CheckShortURL? +

Those are websites that require you to copy a link, open a new tab, paste, and wait. Link Transparency works inline on any page โ€” hover, click the icon, and see the destination without leaving. No copy-paste, no tab switching.

How is it different from ClearURLs? +

ClearURLs passively strips tracking from URLs in the background but cannot expand shortened links or show you where they lead. Link Transparency does both: it reveals destinations AND removes trackers, with a visual interface that shows you exactly what was found.

What URL shorteners are supported? +

We support 30+ shorteners out of the box including bit.ly, t.co, tinyurl.com, amzn.to, youtu.be, goo.gl, ow.ly, lnkd.in, and more. You can also add custom domains yourself โ€” and when 5+ users add the same domain, it becomes available for everyone.

Is my data private? +

Yes. We never log your URLs. Link analysis happens through our API but nothing is stored. Your preferences are saved locally in your browser. No accounts, no tracking, no data harvesting.

Is it free? +

Yes, completely free. No premium tier, no usage limits, no account required. Install in 10 seconds and start using it immediately.

Can I add custom shortener domains? +

Yes. If you encounter a shortener we don't recognize, you can add it yourself in the extension settings. Your custom domain works instantly, and if enough users add the same domain, it gets added to the default list for everyone.

Is this a security scanner? +

No. Link Transparency shows you where links go โ€” it doesn't tell you if sites are safe or dangerous. We believe in giving you facts, not fear. Your browser already has malware protection; we just help you see destinations before clicking.

How do I remove utm_source and other tracking parameters from URLs? +

LinkTransparency automatically strips tracking parameters when you preview any link. Click the magnifying glass icon on any shortened URL to see which parameters will be removed (like utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, fbclid, gclid). Then copy the clean URL without trackers.

What is fbclid and why should I remove it? +

fbclid is Facebook Click ID โ€” a tracking parameter Facebook adds to outbound links. It lets Facebook track which links you clicked, even after you leave their site. Removing it from URLs you share prevents this tracking and keeps your links clean.

What is gclid and why should I remove it? +

gclid is Google Click ID โ€” a tracking parameter from Google Ads. It connects your clicks to advertising campaigns and follows you across websites. Stripping it from shared links prevents Google from tracking your activity through those URLs.

Does LinkTransparency work with affiliate links? +

Yes, LinkTransparency is safe for affiliate links. We only strip advertising and marketing trackers, not affiliate parameters. Our "Referral Info" filter (disabled by default) is the only one that could affect affiliate payouts. Normal usage won't break affiliate functionality.

Can I use a keyboard shortcut instead of clicking? +

Yes, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L (or Cmd+Shift+L on Mac) opens a quick preview panel for any link. You can also right-click any link and select "Inspect with LinkTransparency" from the context menu.

Why do shortened links hide destinations? +

URL shorteners like bit.ly and t.co were created to save characters (especially on Twitter). But they also hide where links actually go, which can be used to obscure tracking redirects, misleading destinations, or multiple hop chains through ad networks. LinkTransparency reveals all of this before you click.
